A cow covered in constellations, and one star that shows the way home. Meet the Starry Cow, our Christmas sign of the guiding star.
Why a cow belongs to Christmas
Look at almost any nativity scene and you will find her: the ox or the cow standing quietly by the manger, keeping the newborn warm with her breath. For centuries the gentle cow has been part of the Christmas story, a symbol of patience, care and the simple warmth of a stable on a cold night.
Above that stable, the story says, shone a star bright enough to guide travellers across a desert. A guiding star is one of the oldest Christmas symbols there is: the light that shows you where to go and that someone is waiting for you there.
The Starry Cow: our sign of the guiding star
Our Starry Cow brings the two together. She carries the night sky on her back: the bear, the bird and the hound, every constellation that guides you home. Her sign is Guiding star: care, and a lucky star overhead.
She is the sign for:
- someone far away this Christmas: a student abroad, a friend who moved, family in another country
- a grandmother or a mother who holds the whole family together
- someone at a crossroads who needs to find their way
- anyone who believes in their lucky star
Stars to look for this winter
The constellations on the Starry Cow are real friends of the winter sky. On a clear night in the Northern Hemisphere you can find the Great Bear high in the north, with the two stars at the end of its "bowl" pointing to the North Star, the oldest guiding star of all. In midwinter, the hunter Orion rises in the south with his hound, Canis Major, at his heel, and Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, shining in the hound's chest. Take someone you love outside and find them together. It is a small Christmas tradition worth starting.
