The Deer as a Symbol of New Beginnings

The Deer as a Symbol of New Beginnings

Why has the deer stood for renewal for thousands of years, and why does she belong to winter? The story behind our Fairy Deer, the sign of new beginnings.

The animal that grows its crown again

Every year a deer loses its antlers and every year they grow back, often larger than before. Few animals show renewal so plainly. It is no wonder that people across Europe and Asia have seen the deer as a symbol of rebirth, of light returning after the darkest days, and of starting again without fear.

In old winter songs and folk embroidery the deer often carries the sun, the stars or a whole tree in its antlers. It is the creature that walks out of the long night and brings the new year with it.

A winter secret about reindeer

Here is a fact that surprises most people: male reindeer usually shed their antlers in late autumn, while females keep theirs through the winter until spring. So the reindeer you see with full antlers in midwinter are very likely her, not him.

Our Fairy Deer is a she, too. Her winter antlers are not just big, they grow into a whole forest. Those forest antlers were our founder's own idea, and nature, it turns out, agrees with her.

The Fairy Deer: our sign of new beginnings

At Dyvooo every creature carries a sign, and the Fairy Deer's is New beginnings. Gentle and strong at once, she brings warmth to your day. Her message for the first page of a new year: start again, gently, and let it grow.

She is for:

  • someone starting a new job, a new home or a new city
  • someone recovering, after an illness or a loss
  • someone who has decided that this year will be different
  • a new baby, a new marriage, a new chapter of any kind

Wear the deer this winter

Three small rituals for a new beginning

  1. Let something go. Like the deer drops its antlers, choose one habit, object or worry to leave in the old year.
  2. Plant something. A bulb in a pot by the window in January. By spring you will see the year growing.
  3. Write the first line. Keep a notebook for the new chapter and write one sentence on 1 January, or on the day your new beginning really starts.

The Fairy Deer travels with two other winter signs, the Fire Sheep and the Starry Cow. See them together in Winter Wonders.
