Simargl is a deity of the ancient Russian pantheon and  was one of seven gods. Their idols were installed in the capital, Kiev, by Prince Vladimir the Great in 980. Images of Simargl, intertwined in surprising way in the form of branches and leaves, decorate ancient books and create pictures on the walls of various churches, where Simargl is a "keeper" of the tree of life.
